Machame is the most popular route for climbing Kilimanjaro, faster and also tougher than the Lemosho route. Although not technically difficult, the trails are more strenuous and steeper. However, Machame is popular for a reason.

This route has a great track record, with a reported 60% of climbers reaching the summit. The Machame trek is camping-based and we believe that this offers a more adventurous trekking experience. Although the camping conditions are simple, the service from our porter team is fantastic.

Why Choose Machame Route

The Machame route is relatively difficult as climbers need to be able to ascend the Barranco Wall on day four and contend with a steep incline up Kibo on summit night. According to statistics from Kilimanjaro National Park approximately 50% of trekkers use the Machame Route to ascend Kilimanjaro. The route is very scenic, providing hikers with incredible views and varying landscapes.

Machame Route Success Rate

Success Rate: The Machame route provides ideal opportunities to climb high and then sleep low, which means it has an excellent acclimatization profile. Whilst there are no official statistics, the average success rate across all Kilimanjaro operators is 85% for the seven-day Machame route. It drops to 73% for the six-day option.
